Backlink Quality and SEO Metrics

Affordable link building starts with understanding the quality of each opportunity. For affiliate websites targeting the UK, Europe and the Gulf, assess backlinks against your topic, audience and commercial goals before committing your budget.

How to assess backlink quality

Review the proposed linking page alongside the wider website. A strong domain score alone cannot tell you whether a placement makes sense for your business.

Check these factors:

  • Topical relevance: Does the article cover a subject connected to your linked page? Would following the link help its readers?
  • Audience fit: Look for content serving your intended countries and languages. Ask for evidence behind claims about readership or traffic.
  • Editorial standards: Read recent articles. Check for useful information, clear authorship and links that fit naturally within the content.
  • Placement details: Request the linking URL, destination page, anchor text and link attributes. Inspect the published page yourself.

Buying links that pass ranking credit violates Google’s policies. Paid advertising and sponsorship links should use rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". Review Google’s link spam guidance when comparing how providers acquire links.

Understand Domain Rating’s limitations

Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs’ measure of backlink profile strength on a scale from 0 to 100. It is a relative comparison tool, and its calculation excludes factors such as traffic and link spam. Ahrefs explains how DR works.

Use DR to support an initial review of comparable websites. Then examine the actual linking page, content quality and audience relevance. A higher score provides no guarantee of relevant visitors, stronger rankings or affiliate revenue. A package promising a DR increase therefore needs a separate explanation of its expected business value.

Measure visibility and relevant traffic

Record a baseline before work begins, including target pages, relevant queries, organic clicks and affiliate outcomes.

Use the Google Search Console Performance report to review clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position. Filter by page, query and country to understand performance in each target market. Review individual European and Gulf countries separately where data allows.

In your analytics, track referral visits from linking websites separately from organic search traffic. Monitor useful actions, including affiliate link clicks and confirmed conversions where reporting supports them.

Keep spending tied to evidence

Ask providers to itemise outreach, content creation, reporting and any publisher charges. Compare costs alongside relevance and verified delivery.

Review trends over comparable periods, accounting for seasonality, content changes and search updates. Growth after a placement does not establish that the backlink caused it. Increase spending when the combined evidence supports your goals.
